Apply to the Fall 2019 Economic Justice Power-Building Academy!

WEPOWER activates community power to redesign systems to be just and equitable for all. WE are building a powerful movement led by everyday people who want to create a better future for us all.

We are recruiting community members from…

who want to lead and advocate for economic justice so every family can build wealth and live free from poverty.

Over seven months, you will partner with WEPOWER and other members of your community to:

  1. Develop leadership skills.

  2. Design new solutions to achieve economic justice.

  3. Take action to eradicate poverty.

You will be expected to dedicate a minimum of 15 hours per month towards the Power Building Academy. Due to the number of hours that will be required of your time, you and other participants will receive grant funding. Childcare and meals will be provided during sessions.

Frequently asked questions

+ What are the requirements?

Power-Builders are required to attend meetings. We ask you approach the academy as a journey towards leading change instead of a one-and-done experience.

+ What is the time commitment?

The Academy lasts seven months. Each month has a 15-hour minimum commitment.

We understand things come up. You can miss up to 12 hours in total over the seven month period. If you’re able to, please let us know if you can’t make a session in advance. The WEPOWER team will work to help catch you up.

Contact Gloria ([email protected] or 314-283-3589) for a schedule.

+ What is the cost?

There is no cost to be a Power-Builder. In fact, Power-Builders receive up to $1,000 in grant funding over the course of the academy for their time and participation.

+ Is childcare offered?

Yes, we offer child care at meetings in a nearby room. The meals and snacks provided to Power-Builders are also available for children in childcare.

+ What area do you have to live in?

The Academy that starts in the fall of 2019 is for residents of North and West St. Louis City and residents of the City of East St. Louis. If accepted, you will need to provide proof of residence.

Residents outside of these areas are welcome to fill out applications now to show interest, but they are not eligible for this Academy. WEPOWER will follow up with you in the future if we plan an upcoming Academy in your area. We plan to partner with residents of South St. Louis City in the near future.

+ What will we create in the Academy?

The group will work to develop a campaign for economic justice policy solutions. To learn about the amazing things our previous cohorts of Power-Builders accomplished, checkout the Rise 189 Campaign and the Better Budgets Better Schools Campaign linked below.
