WEPOWER Wednesday: Facing the Headwinds, Fueling the Change

unnamed

Friend,

This spring, the literal and figurative headwinds we’ve faced in our region and beyond have been strong, unpredictable, and downright dangerous. Yet, even with the strong winds coming from every which direction, we gotta keep going outside and leaning into the work of making progress. The forces we’ve been up against are mighty and well-established, and our push for real change will require a collective and sustained effort.

As Angela Davis said, “You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.”

Last week, we were proud to sponsor Hispanic Capitol Day, a gathering dedicated to raising awareness, advocating for policy change, and ensuring that Hispanic, Latino, and Latinx voices are heard at every level of government. At a time when harmful legislation threatens immigrant rights, access to education, and economic opportunity, staying silent is not an option. Our collective responsibility is to make Missouri a place that welcomes all people and values the brilliance, contributions, and humanity of Hispanic and immigrant communities.

Last week, we were also thrilled to host our first Community Wealth Action Group meeting of the year to steward our body of work to close the racial wealth gap by democratizing our economy via worker ownership and better benefits for workers and their families.

The headwinds may be fierce, and we may be on the horizon of facing many seasons of downpours, clouds, and blizzards that try to knock us off our feet. But, now, more than ever, we must be as forceful as the systems working against our communities.

We can do so by creating our own powerful storm of St. Louisans that fiercely drive forward our shared vision of making childcare a civil right, closing the racial wealth gap, and protecting the wellbeing of every family that calls our region home.

CALLS TO ACTION

WEPOWER Celebrates The Graduation of 50 New Community Leaders

This month, we have so much to celebrate. We honor and congratulate the 50 community leaders across St. Louis and East St. Louis who successfully graduated from our multi-month leadership development, power building, and policy change trainings.

Last month at Nexus Midtown, we gathered for our Changemaker celebration to honor the parents, providers, and advocates driving real change in St. Louis. The energy in the room was unstoppable. Congratulations to the:

  1. 27 East St. Louis Power Builders who completed 60+ hours of community organizing training via the Power Building Academy.
  2. 9 early childhood centers that turned their brick-and-mortar into civic hubs that registered nearly 1,000 voters leading up to the November 2024 elections.
  3. 14 Tomorrow Builders Fellows who reimagined our local economy by facilitating hours and hours of community conversations and design sessions among hundreds of St. Louisans.

Freedom work requires leaders dedicated to organizing and building power for our region’s children and families. Thank you to all of our graduates!

WEOWER Proudly Sponsored Hispanic Capitol Day

We are thrilled to have supported and attended Hispanic Capitol Day, where there was a record turnout. Check out this interview with KDSK to learn more.

This important event, led by the Hispanic Leaders Group of Greater St. Louis in partnership with the Missouri Immigration Policy Coalition, brought together community members and elected officials to foster dialogue, build relationships, and push for policies that create a more inclusive and just Missouri. Through legislative roundtables, advocacy training, and direct conversations with policymakers, participants made it clear: We are here, paying attention, and demanding action.

We were honored to stand alongside fellow sponsors AT&T and LiUNA in supporting this critical work. Civic power is built when we show up, speak out, and advocate for policies that serve all of our communities. Together, we’re shaping a future where every voice is valued, and every community is safe and thrives.

Celebrating the Legacy of St. Louis Entrepreneur, Tim Eleby

"We come from the community. We’re in the community, we know what the community needs, and we’re growing." -- Tim Eleby (read his full story here

Recently, we lost a true business leader. Tim Eleby, a WEPOWER Business Accelerator alum, co-owner of The Caramel Room and Pure Catering, passed away, leaving a legacy of entrepreneurship, generosity, and deep commitment to St. Louis.

Tim poured his heart into building spaces where Black businesses could thrive. His work and spirit were felt in every corner of The Caramel Room—including just a few months ago, when we gathered there for WEPOWER Weekend to celebrate and strategize for the future of our city.

Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and all impacted by his leadership. His legacy lives on in the businesses he built, the community he strengthened, and the future he helped shape.
