WEPOWER Wednesday: Rebuild STL’s economy June 24th & beyond

Friend,
We are being attacked on all fronts, and the only way to resist is to build systems designed by us, for us. WEPOWER is grateful to have engaged in a community-driven reimagination of the STL economy, and we believe now more than ever that we must transition to an economy that nurtures and cares for all people who call St. Louis home.
In the aftermath of the devastating tornado, many families, especially those already navigating economic hardship, lost what little stability they had. As St. Louis families work to recover from the tornado—clearing debris, reopening child care centers, and rebuilding community—immigrant families across the country face a different kind of crisis. ICE raids bring fear and instability to neighborhoods already fighting to survive. One is a natural disaster; the other, a policy choice.
St. Louis cannot afford to rebuild the same systems that have failed so many. We need a new economy, one rooted in justice, care, and shared power. That kind of economy doesn’t just appear. Join us in building that economy on June 24th.
Let’s rise to meet this moment. Together.

UPDATES
Come together for tornado recovery:
On Wednesday, June 18, the Live Art Market at City Foundry becomes a call to action, hosted by the St. Louis Early Childhood Tornado Response Team. This evening of volunteerism and community care supports local impacted early childhood centers and the children and family members they serve, all of whom were deeply affected by last month’s devastating tornado. In light of the tornado, the public will come together to help deliver recovery and joy to these families and remind them they are part of a community who is going to take care of them.
Public Hearing on Board Bill 31 this Thursday:
The Board of Aldermen will hold a meeting THIS Thursday, June 12th (5:30 PM, 4145 Kennerly Ave) to hear testimony on $30M in tornado relief funding. Parents and child care providers are urged to attend and share how the storm has impacted them.
Even actress Jennifer Garner knows we have to fight for Head Start:
Good news: the latest federal budget proposal spares Head Start from elimination—thanks to nationwide advocacy and organizing. Support for Head Start remains strong across demographics, with 79% of voters agreeing it’s a smart investment. Jennifer Garner took to NBC’s Today Show to speak up for the program.
Nearly 50,000 parents and alumni have signed an open letter to the President. Want to help? Add your name and contact Congress through NHSA’s Take Action For Head Start.
Let’s keep showing up for our kids.

NEWS + OPPORTUNITIES
INSPIRATION
When the System Fails, Communities Rise:
In Los Angeles, as federal agents ramp up immigration raids, everyday people are doing what the system refuses to: protect their neighbors.
Local volunteers, many of them immigrants themselves, are patrolling neighborhoods at dawn, equipped with bullhorns, whistles, and two-way radios. When ICE shows up, these organizers activate a real-time warning system—alerting families, distributing “Know Your Rights” materials, and making their presence so known that some agents have backed off and left.
This is what grassroots defense looks like. It’s not about charity, it’s about power. It’s a reminder that when institutions target our communities, our communities fight back.
Because no one should face a raid alone.

Let's keep building,
Your Friends at WEPOWER
