WEPOWER Wednesday: Support biz owners like Justin and Chef Nesee

unnamed

To date, WEPOWER has supported 100+ Black and Latinx businesses with intense wraparound services and capital. These STL rooted and growing businesses are critical to our region's economy.

Local entrepreneurs—like Justin Harris, owner of Saint Louis Hop Shop—are currently crowdfunding their business loans, and the community is stepping up to support. When you lend to these businesses, you're investing in their growth and STL's future.

As each loan is repaid, lenders receive their money back, creating a cycle of support that truly comes full circle. Join their journey and help power a more equitable future by lending to a business today.

Let's invest in Justin, as Justin invests in our region.

CALLS TO ACTION

After a year and a half of research and community design and over 1,000 community engagements, WEPOWER and its partners released our second ever playbook on June 24th, as a response to the wealth crisis.

Saint Louis Hop Shop is celebrating 10 years of pouring into the city and now they’re ready to grow. With support from just 15 lenders, they can upgrade their shop and keep serving the drinks and community we love. Lend $25 and be part of their story.

Chef Nesee has been sharing love through food since 2017. Now she’s ready to grow and this loan will help her scale her business and bring even more joy to the community. Help support Nesee by lending to her business.

Check Out This Report From Community Change

Our partners at Community Change recently put together a report that envisions a path to universal public child care — shaped by input from parents, providers, and grassroots organizers.

Building a Vision for Universal Public Childcare: Principles for a Childcare System That Works for Workers and Families, found that a universal public childcare system that effectively meets the needs of families and providers requires a particular attention to families’ financial needs; the needs of children with disabilities; the need for full-day, year-round care; the need for high-quality and age-appropriate youth development, care, and education; and the need for young children to have attentive, consistent relationships with providers.

Make The Child Care Voter Pledge

The STL Child Care Voter Campaign is a campaign to activate community members to become powerful voters and take action to make child care a civil right for every child and family who calls St. Louis home.

We envision an early childhood education system where every family, no matter their race, income, or ZIP code, has access to joyful, high-quality care that opens up endless possibilities for children and communities.

Make the pledge today to protect care for all of our babies!

INSPIRATION

Care is an Act of Collective Power

When institutions undervalue care, communities step in to redefine it, not as a burden, but as a form of resistance and a foundation for new economies.

In a recent post, the New Economy Coalition reminds us that care is political. From supporting elders to mutual aid networks, everyday people are choosing to build systems rooted in collective care, especially in places where traditional structures fail to meet basic needs.

This is what economic justice looks like. It’s about community ownership, dignity, and the power of showing up for each other.

Because building a new economy starts with how we care.
